A Vital Ecosystem Under Threat

The mangroves of Nigeria’s Delta State and Rivers State are more than just trees—they are a critical ecosystem that supports biodiversity, acts as a buffer against coastal erosion, and plays a key role in combating climate change. However, these mangroves are facing severe threats from deforestation, pollution, and climate-related impacts like rising sea levels and extreme weather.

At Delta Azure, we are committed to reversing this trend. By restoring over 520,000 hectares of mangroves, with an additional 30,000 hectares targeted for afforestation, and 470,000 hectares of seagrass for protection and restoration, we are working to protect and rejuvenate this vital ecosystem. Our work goes beyond planting trees—it’s about restoring balance to the environment and creating long-lasting benefits for both nature and people.

Carbon Sequestration

Mangroves are one of the most powerful carbon sinks on the planet, capturing and storing more carbon per unit area than most terrestrial forests. By restoring and conserving these forests, Delta Azure is actively contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

  • Blue Carbon: Mangroves, alongside seagrass meadows, are classified as blue carbon ecosystems due to their ability to capture and store carbon in their biomass and soils. Our project helps sequester millions of tonnes of carbon, playing a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change.
  • Climate Resilience: By improving the health of these carbon-rich ecosystems, we are also increasing their resilience to climate-related impacts, ensuring they continue to provide critical environmental services for generations to come.

Biodiversity Restoration

Mangrove forests are home to a diverse array of plant and animal species, many of which rely on the complex root systems of mangroves for shelter, feeding, and breeding. Restoring these ecosystems helps bring back the biodiversity that has been lost due to habitat destruction.

  • Wildlife Habitats: Our restoration efforts are aimed at creating thriving habitats for fish, birds, crabs, and other species that depend on the mangroves for survival. These species, in turn, support local communities through sustainable fishing and eco-tourism opportunities.
  • Seagrass and Marine Life: Alongside mangroves, we are also working to protect and restore nearby seagrass meadows, which provide vital feeding grounds and shelter for marine species, further enhancing the region’s biodiversity​.

One of the most critical roles mangroves play is protecting coastlines from erosion and storm surges. Their dense root systems stabilize the soil, reducing the impact of waves and tidal forces, which helps prevent coastal erosion and protects inland areas from flooding.

  • Natural Barriers: By restoring mangrove forests, we are strengthening the natural barriers that shield coastal communities from the devastating effects of storms, cyclones, and rising sea levels.
  • Resilience to Natural Disasters: These natural defenses are becoming increasingly important as climate change leads to more frequent and severe weather events.

Pollution Mitigation and Bioremediation

The health of Nigeria’s mangroves has been severely impacted by oil spills and other forms of pollution. At Delta Azure, we are using innovative methods to address this challenge and restore the ecological balance of the region.

  • Oil Spill Monitoring: Through the use of citizen science apps and collaboration with local communities, we can track and respond to oil spills more quickly, reducing the damage to mangroves and improving the speed of recovery​.
  • Biochar for Bioremediation: We are also using biochar—a carbon-rich product derived from agricultural waste and invasive Nipa palms—to help clean up contaminated soils. This not only removes toxins but also improves soil health, enabling faster ecological recovery​.

Sustainable Resource Management

Mangrove ecosystems provide vital resources to local communities, from fish and shellfish to wood and other materials. However, unsustainable harvesting has contributed to the degradation of these ecosystems. Delta Azure is promoting sustainable resource management practices that protect the environment while supporting the livelihoods of the people who depend on it.

  • Sustainable Livelihoods: By providing alternatives like beekeeping, oyster farming, and biochar production, we reduce the pressure on mangroves and encourage sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the local economy​.
